Lews Castle College UHI Benbecula has developed an international reputation for the teaching of traditional music and for providing many opportunities for performance and skills development related to the music professions. Academic provision includes the innovative BA (Hons) Applied Music Degree, HNC music, and the introduction of the new Masters and the Environment degree based at Lews Castle College UHI, recognises the institution as delivering first class teaching and learning in one of Scotland’s rich and unique cultural environments.
Professional development is the key driver on all our courses, with clear focus on performing, creation and arranging, with regular concerts scheduled locally, on the surrounding islands, on mainland Scotland and Europe. Classes and workshops are delivered by outstanding teaching staff, complemented by guest lecturers and visiting musicians. The department has a proven track record of collaboration with local and national agencies such as Ceolas, Taigh chearsabhagh, Feis Rois, Feisean nan Gaidheal and arranges concerts at major events such as Celtic Connections. Opportunities include European exchanges to Brittany, Holland, Greece, Spain, top festival performances and radio broadcasts. LCC Benbecula UHI are also collaborators in the Atlantic Seaway project which promotes students involvement in Scottish Roots music with students from Berklee College of Music in Boston USA. LCC Benbecula UHI has a developing research profile in performance practice, online pedagogy and community engagement.
Uist is well known for its strong Gaelic language community and an ideal and supportive environment to develop your language skills. Gaelic is fundamental to the study of the music from the Outer Hebrides music students are offered free access to selected Gaelic classes up to 5 hours per week.
